SURRENDER
A
missionary had worked among an Indian Tribe for several
years with only meager success. The proud chief refused
to accept the Gospel, thus discouraging his people also
from accepting it. But finally he came under conviction
and trembling from a sense of guilt, he offered the missionary
his belt. "No," said the missionary, "God
cannot accept such a small sacrifice." The chief
left and returned shortly with his rifle and pile of skins
which he laid at the feet of the missionary. Once
more, the missionary rejected his offer. The chief
left again, only to return with his wife, his children and
his tepee. He presented these to the missionary, but
again they were rejected: "These are not enough."
At this, the chief fell on his face and cried out, "Here,
Lord, take poor Indian, too." He had finally
learned that the devotional life must begin with complete
surrender not only of possessions but also of self.
All
to Jesus I surrender. Humbly at His feet I bow.
Wordly pleasures all forsaken. Take me, Jesus, take
me now.
